The technology we get in our cars, came a long way, since Karl Benz' horseless carriage , the tech. we get in today's cars would've probably blown Karl's, visionary mind, in a million bits. So what new tech. we will get in the near future?
1. Steer by wire
Many car makers experimented with it, on various concepts and prototypes, but Infiniti is the first to use it on a car you can actually buy.
Kudos Infiniti.
2. Laser headlights
More and more car makers are experimenting with it. But the honors of putting it into production go to BMW.
I wonder how much this option will cost, and how fast it's price will go down to cheaper cars, as Audi will use it on the R18 race car' and probably in the next R8.
And Mercedes is already putting it in various concepts.
I'm sure that the Japanese are not too far behind.
3. Ultrasonic waves instead of windshield wipers.
We don't know too much about this thing yet, but I bet that McLaren can pull it of.
The question is, at what price? And how fast will car makers drive that price down, to premium and finally to mainstream cars?

Ultrasonic wipers, definitely a good research direction. Laser headlights, I'm skeptical viz pitch control/road prediction and not searing the eyeballs of some other schmuck on the road. Then again, it's not like you can't aim a laser...
Drive-by-wire with no mechanical backup?

Wait, laser headlights? Why is that better than LEDs?

3 technologies thought up by engineers who obviously never drive a real car.
Steer by wire: So, when the car dies and you need to push it off the road, into the drive way, wherever... you'll be completely unable to steer it to where you want to go.
Laser headlights: So, when one stops working, I can't just go down and get a $2.99 replacement bulb, I'll have to take it to a certified service center (or local physics lab) and where they can replace it for only $2,900.99
Ultrasonic "wipers": Bet those work great for dried on dirt and mud, as well as ice and snow from the big storm last night.
Every one of these "solutions" is simply over-engineering something for the sake of over-engineering it. And every one of them adds a bunch of very complex problems into the mix. To quote Scotty: "The more complicated the plumbing, the easier it is to stop it up."

Such rack. So pinion. Wow.

Brighter and more efficient. http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/friken-lasers-… And lasers, how cool is that ?

Did you miss the part with LASERS?

This is the worst thing ever. I can accept the loss of a stick if the car is a supercar and has a good robotized manual. But losing a stick and losing the physical connection to the wheels is turrible.
